INRAE presentation

The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment (INRAE) is a major player in research and innovation. It is a community of 12,000 people with 272 research, experimental research, and support units located in 18 regional centres throughout France. Internationally, INRAE is among the top research organisations in the agricultural and food sciences, plant and animal sciences, as well as in ecology and environmental science. It is the world’s leading research organisation specialising in agriculture, food and the environment. INRAE’s goal is to be a key player in the transitions necessary to address major global challenges. Faced with a growing world population, climate change, resource scarcity, and declining biodiversity, the Institute has a major role to play in building solutions and supporting the necessary acceleration of agricultural, food and environmental transitions.

Work environment, missions and activities

¡ You will join the ECP (Espèces Cibles Protéagineux) team at the UMR 1347 Agroécologie in Dijon and your tasks will fall within the framework of the European project BELIS (Breeding European Legumes for Increased Sustainability). The ECP team is a multidisciplinary research team specialised in the study of grain legumes. It develops genetic and genomic resources for pea, faba bean and lentil and invests in varietal improvement of these species. It carries out its research and pre-breeding activities in collaboration with a network of collaborators at the national and international level.

¡ You will be involved in the collection, management and analysis of genetic and multi-omics data. The data will be hosted in a Neo4J graph knowledge base dedicated to translational research in legumes, OrthoLegKB. The OrthoLegKB database has been developed by the host team and published in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence in 2023. You will need to interact with the BELIS project network to continue data collection, curation and integration, and to introduce new species of seed and forage legumes. Based on the data collected and the needs of the project, you will introduce updates to the database and apply new modelling to enable applications in translational research and optimal use by the community.

¡ Special conditions of activity: You will be welcomed into a multidisciplinary research team and work closely with researchers and breeders involved in grain and forage legume improvement. You will need to demonstrate a strong motivation for database management and translational research and have a sound knowledge of bioinformatics and code management.

Training and skills

Master's degree/Engineering degree

¡ Recommended training: Master degree with professional experience or doctorate in bioinformatics and omic data analysis or genetics and plant breeding.

¡ Knowledge required: Genetics, omic data analysis, modelling and biostatistics. A strong appetite for coding in R and Python is desirable, as is a working knowledge of nextFlow.

¡ Appreciated experience: database management and in particular graph databases.

¡ Skills sought: mastery of written and spoken English, ability to analyze large sets of data, autonomy, rigor, ability to communicate and discuss results, ability to work in a team and network.
