INRAE presentation

The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (INRAE) is a public research establishment under the dual authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Research.

INRAE is recruiting researchers by open competition and offering permanent position.

It is a major player in research and innovation created on 1st of January 2020. INRAE is a research institute resulting from the merger of INRA and IRSTEA. It is a community of 12,000 people with more than 200 research units and 42 experimental units located throughout France.

The institute is among the world leaders in agricultural and food sciences, in plant and animal sciences, and is 11th in the world in ecology and environment. INRAE’s main goal is to be a key player in the transitions necessary to address major global challenges. In the face of the increase in population, climate change, scarcity of resources and decline in biodiversity, the institute develops solutions for multiperformance agriculture, high quality food and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.

Work environment, missions and activities

The Centre d'Economie de l'Environnement de Montpellier (CEE-M) is a research unit of INRAE, the University of Montpellier, the CNRS and the Institut Agro Montpellier, specialising in environmental and resource economics. Your research programme will focus on incentives (subsidies, taxes or contracts) and public policies for the preservation of the environment, natural resources and biodiversity.
Your research will be part of CEE-M's research programmes on the preservation of natural resources and biodiversity, the study of effective and equitable environmental governance, and/or ecologically innovative agriculture.
You will benefit from a wide network of collaborators within the unit, in France and abroad, as well as within the University of Montpellier. You will have the opportunity to benefit from the two weekly seminars organised by the unit on environmental economics and behavioural economics, our annual workshop on environmental and resource economics and other events organised by the CEE-M. Finally, you will have priority access to our experimental economics laboratory and research funding in line with the unit's operating rules (shared budgets and collaborative projects).

PhD or equivalent

Candidates must hold a PhD in economics or equivalent. A solid background in economics with a specialization in environmental and resource economics and/or public economics is expected.
Expected skills include: i) a good knowledge of environmental and resource economics theory (non-renewable and renewable resources), supplemented if possible by empirical methods (ecosystem services, land use), and/or; ii) a good knowledge of theoretical and empirical models developed in public economics (externalities, taxation, regulation).
Candidates with skills in both concepts (e.g. incentive theory) and applications (e.g. taking spatial effects into account) will be given preference. Fluency in English is a must, and long-term international experience is desirable. Candidates who have not yet acquired such experience will be required to spend a year abroad at the end of the placement year.
