INRAE presentation
The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment (INRAE) is a major player in research and innovation. It is a community of 12,000 people with 272 research, experimental research, and support units located in 18 regional centres throughout France. Internationally, INRAE is among the top research organisations in the agricultural and food sciences, plant and animal sciences, as well as in ecology and environmental science. It is the world’s leading research organisation specialising in agriculture, food and the environment. INRAE’s goal is to be a key player in the transitions necessary to address major global challenges. Faced with a growing world population, climate change, resource scarcity, and declining biodiversity, the Institute has a major role to play in building solutions and supporting the necessary acceleration of agricultural, food and environmental transitions.
Work environment, missions and activities
- You will join the ‘Ecophysiology and Functional Genomics of Grapevine’ joint research unit (UMR 1287 EGFV), based at the Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences (ISVV), near Bordeaux. Created in 2007, the EGFV brings together a multidisciplinary research team specializing in ecophysiology, molecular physiology, biochemistry and genetics. Its research focuses on understanding the functioning of grafted vines and the determinants of grape berry quality in the context of climatic and agronomic changes. The unit offers an exceptional scientific and technical environment, integrating INRAE researchers with faculty and students from the University of Bordeaux and Bordeaux Sciences Agro.
- We are looking for a highly motivated engineer to contribute to the Franco-Spanish VITRES project, an ambitious three-year initiative (2024-2026) aimed at improving grapevine production and increasing vineyard resilience and sustainability in the face of environmental challenges in the POCTEFA region. The project focuses on innovative grafting, planting and pruning practices.
- The successful candidate will play a key role in implementing EGFV’s research contributions to the project in particular in relation to x-ray micro-computed tomography/micro-CT analysis of xylem vessels (for example, as described in Camboué et al. (2024), https://doi.org/10.1111/pce.14883).
Your responsibilities will include:
- Perform micro-CT analysis
- Analyze micro-CT data, generate detailed 3D visualizations of functional xylem vessels in a wide range of plant samples.
- Analyze and disseminate results through technical reports, scientific publications and presentations.
- Actively participate in VITRES project activities, including seminars and training sessions.
Training and skills
- Recommended education: Master's/engineering degree in agronomy, plant ecophysiology, or a related field. We welcome applications from early career scientists who would like to develop their image analysis skills.
- Desired knowledge: Knowledge of image analysis, experience of 3D reconstruction in ImageJ/Fiji. Skills in scientific data processing and analysis. Good written and spoken English.
- Desired skills: Strong organizational skills, rigor and autonomy. A keen interest in research and a proactive approach to problem solving. Ability to gather and process scientific data. Effective communication skills for reporting, collaborating with partners, and presenting results. Knowledge of French or Spanish is an advantage.
INRAE's life quality
By joining our teams, you benefit from (depending on the type of contract and its duration):
- up to 30 days of annual leave + 15 days "Reduction of Working Time" (for a full time);
- parenting support: CESU childcare, leisure services;
- skills development systems: training, career advise;
- social support: advice and listening, social assistance and loans;
- holiday and leisure services: holiday vouchers, accommodation at preferential rates;
- sports and cultural activities;
