Volunteer firefighters: civic engagement supported by INRAE
At INRAE, some employees also serve as volunteer firefighters. Thanks to formal agreements between the institute and local fire and rescue services (SDIS), these individuals are allowed to train and respond to emergency calls during their working hours. This commitment is officially recognized through the "Partner Employer of Volunteer Firefighters" label, awarded to INRAE by the French Ministry of the Interior. More than a label, it reflects a broader effort to promote a culture of prevention, solidarity, and civic responsibility within the institute.

Making volunteer commitment possible through dedicated support
Several INRAE staff members choose to serve as volunteer firefighters alongside their professional duties. To support this dual commitment, INRAE has signed agreements with departmental fire and rescue services that allow employees to respond to emergencies or attend firefighter training during their regular working time. Special leave is granted under French civil service provisions to support civic engagement.
This includes time off for:
Emergency response missions, including rescue operations and disaster response involving the protection of people, property, and the environment;
Initial training as a volunteer firefighter (a minimum of 30 days over the first three years, with at least 10 days in the first year);
Continuing training (at least 5 days per year after the initial three-year period).
Trained staff, an asset to workplace safety
INRAE’s volunteer firefighters bring valuable skills to their workplaces. Trained in first aid, fire risk management, and emergency evacuation procedures, they play a key role in fostering a safety culture at INRAE. Many also help raise awareness among colleagues through internal safety initiatives and preparedness actions.

INRAE Recognized as a Partner Employer
The "Partner Employer of Volunteer Firefighters" label, awarded by the French Ministry of the Interior, acknowledges organizations that actively support volunteer engagement in fire and rescue services. For INRAE, it is a testament to the institute’s strong values of mutual support, solidarity, and public service.
