Work environment, missions and activities

The candidate will join our multidisciplinary research team GHOSTE Gestion Hydraulique
Optimisation et Supervision des Transferts d'Eau focusing on optimal management of free surface
hydraulic systems, such as irrigation canals, dams or rivers systems GHOSTE gathers expertise in various scientific disciplines, mainly hydraulic and hydrology, optimization, automatic control and data
assimilation ( It is formed by researchers, engineers, PhD students and technicians, that participate actively in the development of simulation softwares such as the in house software SIC² (Simulation Intégrée des Canaux et de leur Contrôle http :://sic g eau net One of our major activities, is the spatial
hydraulics/hydrology, which aims at improving our knowledge of the worlds rivers through optimal use
of satellite information in a hydraulic network This requires solving inverse problems using adequate DA
techniques Several families of DA methods have been incorporated in SIC² Kalman Filtering, Particle
Filtering, and 4 D Var The Surface Water and Ocean Topography ( satellite mission, to be launched in spring 2022 will be the first mission to observe inland waters globally To prepare its launch, several algorithms, with different levels of complexity, have been proposed to NASA and CNES to produce the official SWOT discharge product Benchmarking experiments have been performed to assess the accuracy of the estimated discharge In this context, the successful candidate will join the SWOT Discharge Algorithm Working Group by testing and validating our discharge estimation algorithm « SIC 4 DVAR » in this benchmark framework The purpose is to generate an operational discharge algorithm that can be applied at the global scale and produce discharge estimates as accurate as possible The candidate main activities are prior to data assimilation, which include 1 processing information from different databases and satellites, 2 optimization of the existing code, such as parallel implementations, 3 running the algorithm on several benchmarks, 4 generalization of the code to the global scale
application.

Training and skills

Master's degree/Engineering degree

Master or engineering Degree in at least one of the following subjects Computer Science, Informatics,

- Applied Mathematics, Environmental Engineering

- Programming abilities, in particular Matlab and Fortran are mandatory

- Applicants need to demonstrate interest and proficiency in Environmental Sciences, in particular
hydraulic/hydrology

- Expertise in the field of deep learning and machine learning is desirable, but not mandatory

-Fluid in spoken and written English Most of the interaction in the team will be English

-The candidate should be able to work both independently and interactively in a team setting and
possess a noticeable enthusiasm for research
