Work environment, missions and activities

You will work in a multidisciplinary project with biologists, epidemiologists and modelers working on the epidemiological surveillance of diseases of perennial plants transmitted by insects. The project involves researchers located at INRAE Bordeaux (UMR Health and Agro-ecology of Vineyards, Frédéric Fabre and UMR Fruit Biology and Pathology, Sylvie Malembic-Maher) and at INRAE Avignon (UR Biostatistics and Spatial Processes, Samuel Soubeyrand). The Nouvelle-Aquitaine Digital Technology Centre (CATIE) is also involved in the project as well as several producer organizations in various wine-growing regions (Bordeaux, Champagne, Lot). You will be based in Bordeaux and benefit from week working session at INRAE Avignon (UR BioSP).

You will more specifically study the epidemiology of Flavescence dorée (FD), a severe disease of grapevine associated with a phytoplasma and transmitted by a leafhopper vector. Its management involves disease detection at plot scale during annual surveys, removal of infected plants/fields and insecticide treatments. You will benefit of three already cleaned datasets of a FD outbreaks gathered in Champagne wine-growing region (3 years survey at plant scale over an area of 50-100 ha), Lot (3 years survey at plant scale over an area of 150 ha) and Bordeaux (3 years survey at field scale over an area of 6000 ha).

By taking advantage of these datasets and using a combination of statistical methods and mathematical modeling techniques, you will provide novel insights into FD dynamics, its associated risk factors, and the potential impact of interventions. More specifically, you will (i) characterize the dispersal of FD and its insect vectors in cultivated vineyard plots, (ii) quantify the risk associated with the presence of abandoned vineyard plots or feral grapevines in proximity to cultivated ones, and (iii) design science-based control strategies based on these findings, with the aim of reducing pesticide use and improving vineyard monitoring.

Training and skills

PhD

Recommended training: PhD in statistics / applied mathematics / epidemiology.

Knowledge required : Strong knowledge in statistics, mathematical modeling, model inference and data analysis. The candidate should have programming skills (R, Python). Knowledge of spatial data processing, of epidemiology and the desire to confront theoretical approaches with the constraints of field actors will be appreciated.

Skills sought: Proven skills in writing scientific publications, enthusiasm and team player attitude.

This position is open for either Post-doctoral fellows.  PhD obtained in 2022, 2023 or 2024
