The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (INRAE) is a public research establishment. It is a community of 12,000 people with more than 200 research units and 42 experimental units located throughout France. The institute is among the world leaders in agricultural and food sciences, in plant and animal sciences, and is 11th in the world in ecology and environment. INRAE’s main goal is to be a key player in the transitions necessary to address major global challenges. In the face of the increase in population, climate change, scarcity of resources and decline in biodiversity, the institute develops solutions for multiperformance agriculture, high quality food and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.
Work environment, missions and activities
The post-doctoral position is part of a larger H2020 research project named BatModel (Better Agri-
Food Trade Modelling for Policy Analysis, see https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/861932 for further
details). BatModel started in September 1 and its overall is to improve existing trade modelling tools
and approaches devoted to the analysis of agriculture and food trade policies. The project is
particularly interested to better account for previously neglected or insufficiently covered issues in
trade modelling such as NTMs, GIs, zero trade flows and quality differentiation, as well as GVCs and
distributional and sustainability impacts of trade liberalization and trade policy.
The postdoc will be part of a research group working on the quality differentiation issue of traded food
products. The postdoc will be in charge of estimating import demand models using French firmproduct
custom data by destination, already available in the research unit, in order to infer a measure
of the quality of French exported products. The empirical approaches used will be in line with the
econometric models developed in the recent trade literature dedicated to the study of product quality
and its impact on trade flows (Khandelwal, 2010; Khandelwal et al., 2013, for example). The results will
be compared with those obtained by other members of the project who will conduct similar tasks using
The postdoc will work under the supervision of Stéphane Turolla, research fellow at INRAE, UMR
The postdoc will be involved in the redaction of the work package’s output and will participate to the
meetings of the BatModel project. lt is also highly expected that the postdoc will contribute in the
redaction of high-quality research articles based on the research conducted and participate to the
academic life of the research unit.

The applicant should have obtained a PhD degree in economics (or is expected to receive a PhD degree by December 18, 2020, no later), have conducted solid research in the field of trade (or eventually IO), and should be familiar with the estimation of (structural) demand models and gravity models. The applicant should also possess solid competences in conducting applied works and be proficient in the use of the statistical software STATA. Finally, the applicant should demonstrate a potential to publish in leading international peer-reviewed journals and be motivated, rigorous, autonomous and able to work within a team.
