The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (INRAE) is a public research establishment under the dual authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Research.
INRAE is recruiting researchers by open competition and offering permanent position.
It is a major player in research and innovation created on 1st of January 2020. INRAE is a research institute resulting from the merger of INRA and IRSTEA. It is a community of 12,000 people with more than 200 research units and 42 experimental units located throughout France.
The institute is among the world leaders in agricultural and food sciences, in plant and animal sciences, and is 11th in the world in ecology and environment. INRAE’s main goal is to be a key player in the transitions necessary to address major global challenges. In the face of the increase in population, climate change, scarcity of resources and decline in biodiversity, the institute develops solutions for multiperformance agriculture, high quality food and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.
Work environment, missions and activities
The MIA-Paris Research Unit brings together statisticians and computer scientists, specialising in modelling, as well as statistical and computer learning in the following domains: biology, ecology, environment, agronomy and agri-food. The Unit has three teams, with expertise in statistical and algorithmic inference methods. The “Statistics & Genomes” (S&G) team develops and disseminates new statistical modelling and learning methods to analyse data from molecular biology. In order to retain its expertise and to adapt to new technologies (in particular the massive use of sequencing and abundance data), the team must constantly renew the statistical methods (dimension reduction, time-series and spatial models, clustering, functional analysis), due to the loss of the Gaussian hypothesis and the massive use of multivariate counting data.
To strengthen and diversify its expertise, S&G is looking for a junior research scientist with skills in models at the interface of statistics and optimal transport, machine learning, deep learning or discrete processes.
You will contribute to the development of methods for data representation, modelling or integration by bringing new skills to the team such as i) discrete value processes (counting processes, InAR, GLARMA) for modelling univariate or multivariate time series, ii) generative approaches in learning (Variational auto-encoders, Generative Adversarial Network) and their links with conventional statistical modelling for unsupervised analysis of large datasets, or iii) recent approaches in learning (kernels, transport metrics) for processing heterogeneous data.

Training and skills
Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent.
A PhD thesis in statistics or machine learning would be appreciated, as well as a solid background in multivariate statistics and very good skills in the implementation of learning algorithms of your specialty using languages such as R and/or Python.
Methodological developments of models at the interface of statistics using concepts from optimal transport, machine learning, deep learning or count processes would be greatly appreciated.
An interest in biology, or even an interdisciplinary research experience in life science, as well as the ability to interact in collaboration with biologists are desired.
Candidates should have a good command of English, and long-term international experience would also be desirable. Successful candidates who have not yet acquired this experience abroad will be strongly encouraged to do so after their probationary period (1st year)
