The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (INRAE) is a public research establishment under the dual authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Research.
INRAE is recruiting researchers by open competition and offering permanent position.
It is a major player in research and innovation created on 1st of January 2020. INRAE is a research institute resulting from the merger of INRA and IRSTEA. It is a community of 12,000 people with more than 200 research units and 42 experimental units located throughout France.
The institute is among the world leaders in agricultural and food sciences, in plant and animal sciences, and is 11th in the world in ecology and environment. INRAE’s main goal is to be a key player in the transitions necessary to address major global challenges. In the face of the increase in population, climate change, scarcity of resources and decline in biodiversity, the institute develops solutions for multiperformance agriculture, high quality food and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.
Work environment, missions and activities
You will be assigned to the Tropical Agrosystems Research Unit (UR ASTRO), which is a multidisciplinary unit comprising 44 permanent staff, including 20 researchers in economics, agronomy, plant health, genetics, and ecology. The unit is working on a research project on "the agro-ecological transition of tropical agricultural systems to improve their resilience to global changes" through three interdisciplinary programs focusing on i) adaptation to climate change and its mitigation through circular bio-economy solutions, ii) the management of polluted soils and the design of diversified agricultural systems and, iii) the sustainable management of soil and plant health through the enhancement of biodiversity.
Positioned in the AgroEcoSyst team (Agronomy and Economics for the Sustainability of agricultural systems), your activities will consist in producing knowledge regarding the socio-economic determinants of the resilience and the transition of tropical agricultural soils in the face of health, environmental and economic disturbances. You will be responsible for developing models to understand the operation of farms and sectors and to design and assess economic innovations as drivers of resilience and the agro-ecological transition (innovative environmental policies, short food circuits, eco-labels). Dealing with multi-scale approaches that explicitly take into account the interactions between different decision levels and the joint production of commodities with various social and environmental services is the main research challenge. You will contribute to our three research programs, but will be more involved in research on adaptation to climate change and its mitigation through the bio-economy. One of the main aims will be to propose territorialized transition scenarios to local stakeholders.
Our research unit is already endowed with modelling tools and detailed databases on soils and farms. You will contribute to the development of Caribbean or international projects on these themes.
Training and skills
Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent.
A PhD or equivalent in economics is recommended. Skills in environmental and resource economics, micro-econometrics, programming and statistics would be highly desirable. Candidates with experience in survey design and multidisciplinary research in tropical environments would be appreciated.
Candidates should have a good command of English, and long-term international experience would also be desirable. Successful candidates who have not yet acquired this experience abroad will be required to do so after their probationary period (1st year).
