The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (INRAE) is a public research establishment under the dual authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Research.
INRAE is recruiting researchers by open competition and offering permanent position.
It is a major player in research and innovation created on 1st of January 2020. INRAE is a research institute resulting from the merger of INRA and IRSTEA. It is a community of 12,000 people with more than 200 research units and 42 experimental units located throughout France.
The institute is among the world leaders in agricultural and food sciences, in plant and animal sciences, and is 11th in the world in ecology and environment. INRAE’s main goal is to be a key player in the transitions necessary to address major global challenges. In the face of the increase in population, climate change, scarcity of resources and decline in biodiversity, the institute develops solutions for multiperformance agriculture, high quality food and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.
Work environment, missions and activities
The EMMAH (Mediterranean Environment and Modelling of Agro-Hydrosystems) joint research unit conducts research on the analysis of the impact of global changes on the functioning of soils and aquifers, the water cycle, agricultural production and their interactions at landscape level. Targeted outputs include proposing management tools for agroecosystems on a territorial scale for the agroecological transition of agriculture based on sustainable management of water and soil resources and taking into account environmental constraints, socio-economic factors, and changes in land use.
The research by the DREAM (Dynamics of territories, functioning of agricultural areas and modelling) team focuses on spatial modelling of crops and their water demand, coupling between agronomic models and satellite data, and the analysis and modelling of agroecosystem dynamics. With this team, you will develop research at the interface between agronomic modelling and the analysis of changes in agroecosystems with a focus on Mediterranean agroecoystems, including horticultural systems, which are particularly sensitive to global changes.
You will study the production capacities of the territory and the temporal dynamics integrating the diversity of pedoclimatic contexts and agroecosystems using approaches combining biophysical models of crops and territorial dynamics. You will define scenarios to manage water and soil resources in agroecosystems in a context of scarce resources and climate change. For this purpose, you will develop an integrated modelling approach, the analysis of heterogeneous data from different sources (remote sensing, farm surveys...) to spatialize the diversity of agropedoclimatic contexts and agricultural practices, the elaboration of indicators on soil and water resources related to ecosystem services and the design of adaptation scenarios with local stakeholders, benefiting from the structured relationships and partnerships already established by the EMMAH unit.
Training and skills
Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent.
In-depth skills in agronomy, landscape agronomy or system agronomy are highly recommended. Specific skills in biophysical modelling, remote sensing and spatial analysis techniques would be desirable.
Candidates should have a good command of English, and long-term international experience would also be desirable. Successful candidates who have not yet acquired this experience abroad will be required to do so after their probationary period (1st year).
