INRAE presentation

The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (INRAE) is a public research establishment under the dual authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Research.

INRAE is recruiting researchers by open competition and offering permanent position.

It is a major player in research and innovation created on 1st of January 2020. INRAE is a research institute resulting from the merger of INRA and IRSTEA. It is a community of 12,000 people with more than 200 research units and 42 experimental units located throughout France.

The institute is among the world leaders in agricultural and food sciences, in plant and animal sciences, and is 11th in the world in ecology and environment. INRAE’s main goal is to be a key player in the transitions necessary to address major global challenges. In the face of the increase in population, climate change, scarcity of resources and decline in biodiversity, the institute develops solutions for multiperformance agriculture, high quality food and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.

Work environment, missions and activities

The ECOSYS (functional ecology and ecotoxicology of agroecosystems) Joint Research Unit conducts research on the integrated functioning of agroecosystems and associated ecosystem services.
You will join the Eco&Phy group, where you will strengthen the work on the functioning of agricultural landscapes within the framework of the agroecological transition, especially on biotic and abiotic dynamics in diversified landscapes.
The prospect of zero pesticides is a major challenge that requires taking into account the evolution of ecological, socio-economic and climatic constraints on the dynamics of the agroecosystem. Within this framework, your objective will be to understand and predict how the diversity of crops and practices in agricultural landscapes can sustainably regulate pathogens. Your research will allow the acquisition of original knowledge on the dynamics and evolution of pathogens in diverse zero pesticide agroecological scenarios. This new knowledge should enable the mobilization of ecological levers to regulate pathogens and limit crop losses in agroecosystems. To do this, you will develop an ecological modelling approach that takes into account the adaptive capacities of organisms and integrates biodiversity on several spatial and temporal scales.
For modelling, you will be able to draw on the skills present in the unit and beyond on INRAE modelling platforms. Data acquisition on a landscape scale will be a major challenge. You will benefit from the existing skills at the ECOSYS joint research unit in the fields of ecophysiology and epidemiology of diversified crops and transport of biotic (e.g. spores) and abiotic (e.g. pesticides) particles in agroecosystems, as well as from complementary skills present in other research units of the Saclay Agroecology campus.

Assignment to Saclay's site from the year 2022

Training and skills

PhD or equivalent

Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent.
In-depth skills in ecology, in particular landscape ecology and/or evolutionary ecology, as well as modelling are highly recommended. An interest in landscape-scale experiments and skills in epidemiology or agronomy or agroecology would be desirable.
Candidates should have a good command of English, and long-term international experience would also be desirable. Successful candidates who have not yet acquired this experience abroad will be required to do so after their probationary period (1st year).

INRAE's life quality

By joining our teams, you benefit from:

- 30 days of annual leave + 15 days "Reduction of Working Time" (for a full time);
- parenting support: CESU childcare, leisure services;
- skills development systems: training, career advise;
- social support: advice and listening, social assistance and loans;
- holiday and leisure services: holiday vouchers, accommodation at preferential rates;
sports and cultural activities;
- collective catering.
