The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (INRAE) is a public research establishment under the dual authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Research.

It is a major player in research and innovation created on 1st of January 2020. INRAE is a research institute resulting from the merger of INRA and IRSTEA. It is a community of 12,000 people with more than 200 research units and 42 experimental units located throughout France.

Work environment, missions and activities
The Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation in Societies Laboratory conducts research in the study of science, technology and innovation in society. It looks at contemporary transformations linked to the development and diffusion of knowledge and technologies in public action, markets and organizations. You will be a member of the computational social science team. Computational social science is understood as a kind of scientific practice in which the analytical frameworks, modes of reasoning and qualitative methods of sociology are combined using numerical and computer-based methods in the investigation. This type of social science using and developing various tools and algorithms enables the collection, processing, analysis or viewing of numerical or digitized data considered necessary for the investigation.
Your mission will be to develop and apply computer methods to the study of sociotechnical transformations in agriculture and food production, and notably, the digitalization or datafication that affects these systems and social worlds: promises and effects of the development of digital faming, connected agriculture and precision agriculture; development of integrated data systems to measure environmental impacts of agricultural activities on different scales in relation to the agroecological transition; diversification of the types and modes of production of numerical data including private actors; use of data as a means of governing and steering agricultural systems. You will be responsible for developing research projects in cooperation with members of the computational social science team, contributing to the digital platform CorText, as well as studying modes of innovation and sociotechnical transitions of agriculture and agri-food systems. You will contribute to the development of European or international projects on these themes.
Training and skills
Skills in social sciences, ideally with experience and knowledge of science and technology and/or digital humanities would be desirable, as well as skills in heterogeneous data analysis (textual analysis, analysis of complex networks, computational linguistics…) and computer programming. Candidates should have a good command of English, and long-term international experience would also be desirable. Successful candidates who have not yet acquired this experience abroad will be required to do so after their probationary period (1st year).
